Vancouver Recital Society presents the internationally renowned
Silk Road Ensemble with Y-Yo Ma
(Vancouver, BC) – The Vancouver Recital Society (VRS) presents the critically acclaimed Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma at the Orpheum Theatre on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at 7.30pm. The Silk Road Ensemble is a collective of internationally renowned performers and composers from more than 20 countries. The Ensemble is currently touring nine select cities in North America - the Vancouver concert is their only engagement in Canada. The performance will feature music by some of today’s most innovative composers, including Osvaldo Golijov and a Canadian premiere from Gabriela Lena Frank.
"Wonderful new pieces have emerged from the commissioning workshops we’ve held in the past few years,” said Yo-Yo Ma, Silk Road Project founder and artistic director. “Some of this music—such as Osvaldo Golijov’s ‘Air to Air’ and a brand-new piece by Gabriela Lena Frank—comes from composers we’ve developed deep relationships with. Other pieces on this tour my fellow Ensemble members have brought to the group or created for us as a way to share their own traditions. We can’t wait to engage our audiences in this musical dialogue.”
The tour will present a wide range of music, new and traditional, hailing from Asia to Europe to the Americas, including a world premiere from Berkeley-native composer Gabriela Lena Frank. Written for the Silk Road Ensemble, her multi-movement piece “¡Chayraq!: Rough Guide to a Modern Day Tawantinsuyu” alludes to the music of indigenous festivals, religious ceremonies and harvest fiestas of Latin America. Another highlight of the tour, Osvaldo Golijov’s “Air to Air” presents a soundscape of Christian-Arab and Muslim-Arab melodies, indigenous Mexican voices in prayer, and 18th-century Sardinian protest song. In addition, Silk Road Ensemble performers have contributed several pieces celebrating the joy of community, such as gaita player Cristina Pato’s new arrangement of two popular muiñeiras, the fast-paced traditional dances of Galicia.
The Silk Road Ensemble line-up for the tour includes the following fourteen members: Jeffrey Beecher, contrabass; Mike Block, cello; Shanir Blumenkranz, oud; Nicholas Cords, viola; Jonathan Gandelsman, violin; Joseph Gramley, percussion; Colin Jacobsen, violin; Kayhan Kalhor, kamancheh; Yo-Yo Ma, cello; Cristina Pato, gaita; Shane Shanahan, percussion; Mark Suter, percussion; Kojiro Umezaki, shakuhachi; Wu Man, pipa.
